Therapy for Surviving Narcissistic Abuse, and Domestic Violence in Stratford and Ontario
Narcissistic Abuse:
What is narcissism and are you dealing with someone who is a narcissist? Narcissism is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with oneself, an inflated sense of self-importance, and a deep need for admiration. Individuals with narcissistic traits often lack empathy and tend to manipulate people and relationships for personal gain. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a clinically recognized condition where these traits significantly impair functioning and interpersonal relationships, causing distress for both the individual and others.
Narcissistic abuse refers to the emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical harm inflicted by a person with narcissistic traits or personality disorder. This form of abuse often involves manipulation, gaslighting, verbal attacks, smear campagnes, and a constant undermining of the one’s self-worth. Victims may experience confusion, anxiety, and depression as their sense of reality is distorted and their boundaries are violated, leading to a toxic cycle that can be challenging to break.
Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence and coercive control is a pattern of abusive behaviour in intimate relationships that seeks to establish power and control over a partner. It can manifest in various forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse as well as isolation from family and loved ones. This behaviour can affect individuals of any age, gender, or background, often leading to long-lasting trauma or death. In parts of Australia, coercive control in intimate partner and family relationships has been criminalized. Perpetrators there, now face 14 years imprisonment; a small movement towards preventing women and children from being killed at the hands of an intimate partner or former partner.
